Case Studies of Traditional or Local Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) Related to Wetlands in Asia

Downloads

Due to the impact of climate change and other factors, the number of disasters has increased worldwide. Especially, the Asian region is the most affected area in the world regarding the number of disasters, the number of deaths, and the amount of damage. As the number of disasters increases globally and the damage has expanded, Eco-DRR draws attention. This concept has been integrated into various international frameworks such as Sendai Framework, Sustainable Development Goals, Convention on Biological Diversity, Ramsar Convention etc.

In 2019, Wetlands International Japan began a project to examine traditional and local Eco-DRR case studies related to wetlands in Asia and evaluate their effect. The project was supported by the Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund from April 2019 to March 2023. Asian experts conducted a field study and workshops to plan and create a format for case studies. The format was designed to select Eco-DRR cases and present in a manner by which they could easily be understood. The collected case studies were compiled to this booklet. There are 19 case studies from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Japan. Additionally, videos of the four Japanese case studies are available on YouTube.
