What we do

Wetlands International Japan works on wise use and restoration of wetlands and restoration of their biodiversity through researches on coastal areas and freshwaters, study of human practices on wetlands, and Ramsar CEPA (Communication, Education, Participation and Awareness) activities.

Monitoring of wetland creatures

We carry out researche in coastal areas and freshwaters, as well as capacity building for tidal flat survey at citizen’s participation.

Research on wetlands and human livelihood

“Wise use of wetlands” is one of the three pillars of the Ramsar Convention. In short, is a state of a wetlands being utilised and maintained by humans in a sustainable manner. We study traditional and experiential wise use practices in and outside Japan.

Ramsar CEPA activities

We are designated as a Ramsar CEPA Non-Governmental Organisation focal point. We work on dissemination of the Ramsar convention and wise use of wetlands.

What are Wetlands?

In general, a wetland is an area of land whose soil is saturated with moisture either permanently or seasonally. Such areas may also be covered partially or completely by shallow pools of water. In Ramsar definition, wetlands include freshwater swamps, lakes and marshes, rivers, mangrove forests, tidal flats, coral reefs, rice paddies, ponds, canals, dams, among others.Read more
