Research on wetlands and human livelihood

“Wise use of wetlands” is one of the three pillars of the Ramsar Convention. Ramsar defines wise use as “the maintenance of their ecological character achieved through the implementation of ecosystem approaches, within the context of sustainable development.” In short, we can say it is a state of a wetland being utilized and maintained by human in a sustainable manner.

“Restoration” does not necessarily mean “protected” nature; there are many examples where human intervention contributes to maintain rich ecosystems. WIJ studies those traditional and experiential wise use practices in and outside Japan. Read more.
